Well there was 2 guitars and me and another guy were bidding on both of them. What I think happened was the other guy won both guitars and then he decided which one he wanted. So he withdrew his final bid on the guitar I ended up getting and they sent me that offer to buy it for my last bid of $360.

It was a 'No Reserve' auction so I think that's where it was different than most other auctions I've ever won. They almost always had a reserve set. So with no reserve, they actually can just sell it to the next highest bidder. Where reserve auctions usually reset the entire auction because the reserve wasn't met once the final bid is retracted.

All this us just guessing but it seems like the most logical explanation. The seller was a business that was clearing out inventory at Rock bottom prices so they didn't have to pack it all up and move it to their new location. So it doesn't make sense for them to bid against themselves, IMO. It goes against their reason for selling the guitar to begin with. 🤷

That's my thoughts on the matter, anyway. Whatever the case, I ended up with a 2023 Epiphone reissue '59 Les Paul Standard for $200 and a minor crack that it didn't have when it was shipped. And I couldn't be happier. Well, I'd be happier if the FedEx guy didn't crack the neck but then I wouldn't have gotten back $160 as a partial refund.

Tbh, I doubt I'd have been any happier lol. I won't ever sell that guitar so it didn't matter that it wasn't worth XXXX anymore. Or that it was worth this much less now that it has that crack.

Im telling you. Franklin Guitar Works. A subsidiary of MIRC, the 'USED' place. They sent out an email saying they had all this stuff going up for auction so I went to take a look. Obviously this was a warranty return and they hadn't been able to repair the scratch that was on it that whoever wasnt happy with for their $1100.

That scratch literally disappears when you put a strap on it. So I bid on it and only one other person was bidding with me. The other guitar we were bidding on needed a new nut made for it. They had removed the old one to prep for the replacement and that was it. Same aged Dark Burst finish. So I didn't care which one I won. Then I lost both to the same guy and I was pretty disappointed.

About an hour after the auction ended, I got to my parents house with my mom after taking her to run errands and found my Dad having a stroke. It was sometime during that day that I got the 2nd chance offer to buy it so I didn't hesitate. The last my dad knew was that I had bid on that guitar and was waiting for the auction to end. So, I was able to tell him later that I actually won that guitar.

At least something positive came out of that day. It was hard to be excited about it. That's the main reason I didn't take their offer to replace the guitar with another one when they offered. That and I didn't want the 2nd guitar to get damaged also and end up having to keep a guitar with the headstock completely broken off or something.

I paid $360 and was ECSTATIC to get what was basically a brand new guitar with 1 scratch for that little money. So when they offered a refund of $160, I took it and ran! I knew it would only take me a few minutes and a few $ to, fix it so that was more than enough to make it right.

Tbh, I still would've been THRILLED if I had gotten nothing back and had to keep the guitar as it is for $360. I still saved enough at that price to make it more than worth it.

It just got the first coat of cherry red lacquer sprayed over the crack. Guess it's too late to turn back now lol. It didn't come anywhere close to the tape on the right side so no issues there. The bottom edge of the nut is exposed but that's no problem.

Other than that, it looks like it's going to blend into the oem finish quite well. I'm not trying to cover it completely. Just give it more red tint than it had so it doesn't stick out so much. The dark spots on the right are where the finish chipped out. The finish from pens I was using collected in the depressions and darkened them up big time.

This morning I donned earplugs, plugged in the wireless and took safe distance down the hall in order to play my Vox AC10C1 dimed. EeeYeow!! I used my Buddy Guy and US Telecaster for the experiment. I’ll have to try some humbucker guitars later. AND my photos won’t load 🤷‍♂️
 
I finished up the repair on the Epiphone a couple of days ago. I'm still in shock at how great it turned out. I don't think it needs anything else so I'm just going to leave it like it is.

I played it today. It's not sticky or anything so I think it's going to work just fine. Was able to test out the attenuator I just bought, also. It works great and sounds fine, from what I can tell.

It feels weird cranking the amp to wide open and then using the attenuator to control power into the speaker. The huge rheostat they used to build it feels funky when you turn the knob but otherwise, it's great! The ability to use headphones with my amp, now, is great. I can tell it'll come in handy a lot even though it doesn't sound that great. It's clear they just built a basic amplified circuit to send it to headphones, probably using a single op-amp or something.

2007 Epiphone LP Ultra, Weights like an SG at 7 lbs (chambered), and has a belly cut in the back.

Mine has a natural finish, no burst, which is near impossible to find if you're not in Australia (I was told that's where it's from). It doesn't have a piezo (Nanomag) pickup (no controls in the back, second output jack or 9V battery), like following Ultra II and III. Just regular humbuckers.
