Strat-style guitars is kind of a strange thing for me,
had avoided them for many years, finally tried out some cheap Squiers...
sold them, got other ones, never really bonded with them.
Even got to try some older models from the 80-90s
Nonetheless meanwhile there are a few in my stable
Unfilled mahogany, finished in Danish oil, cured with beeswax. The body is Warmoth’s “hollow” Strat: heavily chambered for resonance (it sustains like a Les Paul). It kinda of looks and feels like an old cello.
After avoiding Strats for a very long time I finally bought a hardtail Robert Cray model some years ago. That guitar got traded for my Fender '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb. Hated to see it go but I've always wanted a Deluxe Reverb. I would not pay Fender's ridiculous price ($1700) for a new one so that trade was my only route. Then I decided to replace the Strat with a PRS Silver Sky. Here's both of them.
While I wish it was a hardtail at least they've nearly decked the bridge John Mayer style and I never use the whammy bar anyway. I compared it to every Fender Strat in it's price range and found I preferred the Silver Sky. Fatter neck with a nice satin finish. Bolder sounding pickups. Tone controls that cover the bridge pickup as well and just a better overall build and feel to it.
Then this one came along only a couple of months ago. A G&L Comanche in Emerald Blue.
I had one before and sold it. Bad move because once G&L closed it's doors I wanted to buy another before new models disappeared completely. Luckily MIRC bought the remaining G&L inventory to sell through their Reverb Store and mine was the last one they had. The pickups are another Leo Fender design. They're Z-Coil MFD's an MFD type of split coil humbucker that sounds like a single coil pickup but has much greater dynamic range and higher output. Like the ASAT MFD nothing else sounds quite like them. It's very unique guitar.
