I was on my bed and surfing on my tablet. I hear this really intermittently out of tune guitar coming from the next door neighbors backyard. I went over and introduced myself to the young man playing. He is my neighbor Steve’s son in law.
So anyway, I told the young man that I repair guitars and noticed it wasn’t staying in tune. I asked if I could have a look. He said sure.
It was a Mitchell acoustic dreadnought from guitar center and the action was really high at the 5th fret and the action at the nut was kinda high also on the wound strings. The strings were old as well. So, I asked him if he’d like it adjusted and a new set of strings on it and he said “sure”. So, I told him a let me take your guitar next door and I will return it within the hour.
When I got it into my guitar room, I cut off the strings and cleaned and oiled the board. The tuners were loose front and back, and the screws were backing out of the buttons. One was so loose it didn’t really engage and would have likely fell out soon. The nut fell out so I glued it in with a drop of loc-tite as my super glue was dried up.
The 2 way truss rod was in the middle no man’s land and needed tightening.
I tightened the tuners,, engaged the rod, and strung her up with EB Earthwood 12-54 med light and adjusted the neck. The action at the nut ro the first fret was spot on. I stretched the strings and tuned it and returned it. Took about a half hour.
I told him if he breaks a string to just stop by as I have hundreds and to bring it back when we get into the wet season again as the neck will need adjusting.
Now when he plays in the back yard it will sound pleasant.
