Supertramp was my "guilty pleasure" whenever those questions arose. I like their compositional skills and harmony...they were masters of generating a hook.
Years later, following their rise to fame ... after all the chaos ... a fellow with whom I'd performed frequently called one night all excited. Shouted that I needed to get out to "The Cascade" (a live music bar suited to rock and blues) to see who was on stage doing jazz sets.
Daveis, Palmer, and Thomson...plus a drummer, don't know who.
Damn fine jazz emanating from that stage that night. They said they were on their way north to Seattle and simply stopped along the way.
Glad they did.
