My buddy Victor, aka
@Strummer , got a Squier CV 50’s Tele over the summer. I had it for awhile and did a set up on it and polished the frets. The nut was too high, which is better than the slots being too low. I straightened the neck with my notched straight edge and checked the frets. Not a proud fret to be found. No pokey fret edges. The neck carve was comfortable.
It had the vintage style tuners and gloss, tinted finish on the neck. Pine body. It had the ashtray bridge with three barrel saddles. I put a little lock tight on the heigh adjustment screws from the bottom, and on the intonation screws threads, as they tend to move around when you take all the strings off to restring it. All the screws and nuts on the guitar needed snugging up. Just typical import guitar stuff. The electronics sounded great, even through my Mesa and Marshall.
What a tone with the gain on. Think of the guitar solo from Pat Benatar’s Hell is for Children. I had been looking at an American Vintage II 51 Tele, and this sub $400 guitar kicked its ass. If this new Standard hadn’t come out, I would have ordered a Squier just like his.
The tuners on the new Standard are the same as on the MIM Player series and some of the new American ones. I will likely replace them with the two pin vintage style tuners where you insert the string into the slot on the peg.
